Most sump pumps last seven to ten years. Most homeowners have never replaced one, which means most are running a pump that is already overdue.

WHY THIS ONE IS BUILT DIFFERENTLY

Cast iron body and motor cover. A sump pump motor sits in water and makes heat. Plastic traps that heat inside the housing. Cast iron pulls it out into the water around it, so the motor runs cooler and lasts longer.

Vertical float switch on a stainless steel rod. Cheaper pumps use a tethered float, a ball on a cord that swings out sideways as the water rises. In a narrow pit, or one with silt in it, that float can catch on the pit wall or the discharge pipe and never trigger. The motor is fine. The switch simply never told it to start. A vertical float travels straight up and down in its own space, with nothing to catch on.

DO YOU NEED 1/3 HP OR 1/2 HP?

For most London homes 1/3 HP is the right call, and 48 gallons a minute is more than enough for a typical residential pit. Step up to 1/2 HP if you have a high water table, a deeper than average basement, a long horizontal discharge run, or a pump you already know runs constantly through spring.
